Recite the festival morning service (MT 414). When the Amidah is recited silently, we add "Mashiv haruach u'morid ha'gashem" (MT 472). When the Shaliach Tzibbur chants the repetition, s/he adds the prayer for rain (MT 473) after the words "rav l'hoshia" (MT 472). Traditionally, we open the ark for this prayer. After the prayer for rain, we close the ark, and the Shaliach Tzibbur continues with "mashiv haruach..."
For Torah service details, see below, "Shacharit Torah Reading Notes."
We recite Yizkor (MT 612).
Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12 (P 1569, RP 1320, WTC 1015)
Shacharit Torah Reading Scroll #1 - Alternative
Deuteronomy 34:1-12 (P 1582, RP 1426, WTC 1019)
Genesis 1:1-2:3 (P 29, RP 19, WTC 5)
Numbers 29:35-30:1 (P 1214, RP 1086, WTC 981)
We begin with the Torah service and hakafot as detailed for the evening of Sh'mini Atzeret/Simchat Torah. However, before continuing with Shema, we recite the Thirteen Attributes (MT 496).
Procedure for reading from scroll #1: We call up for aliyot anyone from the congregation who would like to be called up. We repeat the cycle of aliyot through all but the final aliyah until everyone has been called up. For the final aliyah (concluding the book of Deuteronomy), we call up the Chatan/Kalat Torah (MT 506). Do Hagbah and G'lilah for the first scroll.
Procedure for reading from scroll #2: We call up the chatan/kalat Torah (MT 508). As we read concluding words of each day of creation (ending with "Va'y'hi erev vay'hi voker, yom..."):
1. The reader chants the preceding phrase using an identifying melody
2. The congregation recites the words "Vay'hi erev vay'hi voker, yom . . ."
3. The reader repeats these words in a special melody and continues chanting. Some identify this melody as the concluding theme of Shirat Hayam, and others as a High Holy Day motif. For some examples of this melody, see ATC 81 and Jacobson, Chanting the Hebrew Bible (JPS, 2002), 621. The reader pauses before beginning chapter 2 of B'reishit. The congregation recites Genesis 2:1-3, and then the reader repeats these verses.
Joshua 1:1-18 (P 1642, RP 1445)
Recite the Kiddush for festival morning (MT 605).
We add Ya'aleh v'Yavo for Sh'mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, and Harachaman for Yom Tov to Birkat Hamazon
Havdalah: After sundown, recite Havdalah (MT 612). We recite only the blessing over the wine and the blessing of separation.
